Specialized ALS Care: Adaptation & Quality of Life

Caregiver providing specialized ALS support including mobility assistance and communication device facilitation at home in Los Angeles.

Living with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) requires a care partner who is prepared for a journey of constant adaptation. At CareWell Homecare, our caregivers are specifically educated in the progressive nature of ALS, focusing on maintaining comfort, function, and dignity as physical needs change. We provide expert assistance with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) such as bathing, dressing, and hygiene, ensuring that the client remains the director of their own care. By prioritizing energy-conservation strategies, we help manage fatigue while supporting the individual's autonomy for as long as possible. To ensure the most effective support, the specific level of assistance for each task is determined during our initial clinical assessment and updated as the condition evolves.

Expertise in Transfers & Range-of-Motion Support

As muscle strength changes, safe positioning and mobility become paramount to preventing complications. Our team is trained in advanced transfer techniques and the correct use of assistive equipment, such as Hoyer lifts, sit-to-stand devices, and specialized power chairs. We focus on "Joint Preservation" and "Pressure Relief," ensuring that the client is comfortably positioned in bed or their chair to prevent skin breakdown and support respiratory health. We also provide dedicated assistance with Passive Range-of-Motion (ROM) exercises to maintain limb flexibility and reduce the risk of muscle contractures.

Communication, Advocacy & Nutritional Safety

ALS can impact the muscles used for speaking and swallowing, presenting unique challenges for connection and nutrition. Our caregivers act as advocates for our clients, supporting the use of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) devices, ranging from simple letter boards to advanced eye-gaze technology, ensuring the client's voice is always heard. Furthermore, we prioritize nutritional safety by assisting with specialized meal preparation, such as thickened liquids or modified food consistencies, to prevent aspiration and ensure adequate hydration, always following the specific protocols provided by the client's medical team. Our in-house Doctor of Physical Therapy is always available to ensure caregiver familiarity with our clients' home exercise and physical activity routines.
